Constance Sofa

Designer Flemming Lassen

Named posthumously after Flemming Larsen’s wife, Irene Constance, the Constance Sofa is one of two designs in a series of inviting furniture pieces. The plush and shapely piece rests on wooden legs and features an exaggerated form with deep seat cushions, curved back and armrests and button details. Deceptively lightweight despite its portly shape, the award-winning piece was first designed in 1935 for the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild’s annual exhibition in 1935. Set on wooden legs, it is available in a range of upholstery options.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Flemming Lassen

Credited for his role in bringing functionalism to Denmark, Flemming Lassen was an architect and designed noted for his exacting craftsmanship and naïve expression. Lassen drew much of his inspiration from the architect Mies van der Rohe and the tenets of the Bauhaus artistic movement —a less is more approach focused on form, function and novel materials counterbalanced with human needs. His original and distinctive designs with timeless silhouettes still resonate today.
